The students in the after school program that I worked with spent months stepping around garbage in Mill Creek while investigating for crayfish, mayfly nymphs, sticklebacks, and more. The students had learned about plastic bottle and how slowly they decompose and were frustrated by all of the garbage in the creek.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yessah.net\/rebecca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/05142010-159.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80\" title=\"clean the creek 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yessah.net\/rebecca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/05142010-159-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Mr. Carter and Clean the Creek! participants\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.yessah.net\/rebecca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/05142010-159-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.yessah.net\/rebecca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/05142010-159-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Carter and Clean the Creek! participants<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They were inspired to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153do something!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d about the trash. The students decided to host a stream cleanup and invited other students, siblings, Maine Conservation Corps members, and citizens to participate. The South Portland Stormwater Manager came to the cleanup to learn more about the students&#8217; work and to tape their efforts for the South Portland Public Access Chanel. The Clean the Creek! participants cleared bags of glass, shopping carts, a bike, and clothing from the stream.<\/p>\n<p>It was a truly awesome experience to witness young people who were confronted with a problem discover and successfully carry out a solution.
